Straw star turn at Chesterfield rally

Around 100 Labour Party members from Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire packed into the Chesterfield Miners Welfare to attend a rally with Secretary of State for Justice, Jack Straw.

Toby Perkins, Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for Chesterfield opened the meeting by focussing on the huge progress made in chesterfield under a Labour Government, looking at progress in schools, the Royal hospital, the Sure Start facilities and nursery school support and tax credits that have done so much for young parents; and the radical measures that have brought so many pensioners out of poverty, such as the Winter Fuel Allowance, free bus passes, and the Pension minimum Income Guarantee.

He also praised the monumental efforts that have seen Chesterfield win awards as one of the top performing Constituency Labour Parties in the Country.

This was followed by the keynote speech from Rt Hon Jack Straw, who in addition to praising the contribution of Toby Perkins, paid warm tribute to Natascha Engel MP for Derbyshire North East.

He then spoke at length about the differences a Labour Government has brought to ordinary people in Britain, and reminded members of the feeling of uselessness that Labour Party members felt during the 18 terrible years of Thatcherism.

He expressed his determination that we must never go back to those days again, and explained about how his famous soapbox campaiging style evolved in Blackburn and recalled an anecdote from a previous soapbox session in Chesterfield.

He finished by describing the antics of Liberal Democrat MP’s and Councils from around the country. Straw described the Liberals as the ‘scavengers of politics’ for their opportunistic and morally bankrupt adoption of any populist causes that they can use to try and scrape votes together.

A lengthy question and answer session followed with questions on a huge variety of topics from the 10p tax problems to school rebuilding programme and pensioners benefits.

Natascha Engel closed the meeting with an impassioned plea for all aspects of the Labour movement to work together to bring about the change that continues to be true to our values and to protect the huge improvements that we have seen over the term of the Labour Government.
