Chesterfield MP in New Expenses Probe

Lib Dem Chesterfield MP Paul Holmes is today at the centre of another scandal involving his Parliamentary expenses, hot on the heels of the devastating findings of the enquiry into the Dolphin Square affair.

This week Mr Holmes has been reported to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner for using his Parliamentary Allowances to run a political campaign on the funding of the free pensioners bus service in Chesterfield.

It appears numerous unsolicited letters have been sent by Mr Holmes to constituents on Parliamentary stationary and using pre-paid postage after rules specifically banned the practice.

The allegation is that Mr Holmes has used taxpayers money to fund a bitter political campaign in the highly marginal seat of Chesterfield when he specifically knew that it was banned and possibly illegal.

Toby Perkins said:

“Yet again Mr Holmes is caught in the mire and sleaze of another expenses scandal. Only last week he was made to apologise for taking a wedge of cash from a property developer now this.

“It is a very serious allegation that has been made, but to use taxpayers money to fund a political campaign so close to the General Election is particularly serious, if not illegal.

“Obviously I dispute what Mr Holmes has said in the letter on the subject, but that is politics. If Mr Holmes has something to say he should do so through his campaign funds, not Parliamentary expenses. If you have received an unsolicited letter from Mr Holmes on the subject please get in touch so I can pass on the information to the authorities.

“What is does show is he is scared stiff of losing his seat, as he should be, and will go to any lengths to keep it, even continuing his dodgy expenses record!”
