Minister salutes working community

The success of a Chesterfield project, which has helped over 60 unemployed people find jobs this year was demonstrated to a visiting Government Minister yesterday.

Jim Knight MP, the Employment and Welfare Minister, joined Labour’s Parliamentary candidate Toby Perkins, on a visit to the Communities that work project on Cuttholme Way.

Local people who have found work through the project joined staff to explain the background to the project, which has produced results during a difficult time in the job market.

The project is funded by the Primary Care Trust and through Chesterfield Borough Council using the Government’s Working Neighbourhoods fund.

Toby Perkins said: “It is great to see what a difference this project has made to people who just want to work. This is another example of Labour’s investment in communities, and in fighting for jobs. It is estimated that over the three years the project has been running, around 300 people will have found work through this project. When the Tories talk about cutting money to local communities they are talking about projects and funding like this. The ‘Communities that work’ project is too important to the local community to let any Tory Government put it at risk.”

Jim Knight MP added: “ It is so important to actually come to areas like Chesterfield and see the great work that is happening on the ground, with money from the Working Neighbourhoods Fund. I can also take back lessons from this to inform us in how we can continue to improve the service we offer to people who are looking for work. I am delighted to see that the NHS is also involved in this project because the link between worklessness and health are well known. I am grateful to Toby Perkins for bringing me here and to the Communities that work project for all their work in getting local people back into work.”
