Flying Start

Labour’s campaign for the general election was given a flying start today as Toby Perkins, the Parliamentary candidate in the general election took to the streets of Chesterfield.

Following the announcement that there would be a general election on Thursday 6th May, Toby is making a ‘soapbox’ speech in Chesterfield town centre at 12 NOON.

Speaking at the junction of Vicar Lane and Packers Row, Toby will tell voters that the general election is the most important choice to face Britain for 30 years.

The choice is between a Labour government that will put ordinary people first as we steadily repay the deficit, or dangerous cuts that will hit pensioners, public services and leave four million unemployed again.

With Chesterfield MP Paul Holmes having just been found guilty of putting his ‘personal interest before the public interest’ by the House of Commons Standards and Privileges committee, it is also an election about trust.

Toby Perkins has made specific pledges about his expenses that the Liberal Democrat MP has refused to match, he says: “Whatever party you are from, you are answerable to the people who elect you. If anyone took a payment from a supplier at work that led to their employer paying out more, they would expect the sack. Chesterfield people deserve better than that. It’s time for a fresh start in Chesterfield, an MP with energy and integrity and a government that’s willing to take the tough decisions needed to get Britain’s economy back on track in a fair way that doesn’t risk thousands of jobs and homes.”
