UK ‘Heatwave’ gives fundraising bowls club the rub of the Green

Local people are set to raise record amounts for Macmillan Cancer Support as the blistering heat attracted huge crowds to various charity coffee mornings across Chesterfield borough. Toby Perkins, Labour Member of Parliament and Shadow Minister for Education, visited Brimington Bowls Club annual bowling competition before a meeting with representatives of Barclays on Rose Hill as the bank rolled out its coffee morning events in three local stores.

Brimington Bowls Club bathed in sunshine while local participants battled it out in the increasingly prestigious Derek Heaton Memorial Rose Bowl Bowling Competition. Thirty two bowlers were involved as dozens of local people watched on while enjoying a cup of tea or coffee, refreshments, raffles and tombola. Raising over £1500 last year, this week’s beautiful weather should ensure that record should is broken as the campaign to support such a vital service for those suffering from cancer continues to gain momentum year on year.

Barclays has again agreed to host coffee mornings, with coffee and cakes available to its customers in almost all its stores. The bank has also agreed to double the amounts raised by the Macmillan fundraising team. Praising both Brimington Bowls Club and Barclays for the hard work and preparation in holding events to raise money for Macmillan Cancer support, Mr. Perkins said:-

It was fantastic to see so many people supporting both Brimington Bowls Club and Barclays Bank as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. Pamela Wright and the members of the bowls club have done such an incredible job making the event better each year, raising significant sums of money for such a worthy cause.

He added:-

It is also encouraging to see businesses like Barclays getting involved in this initiative as charities find it increasingly difficult to raise money in such difficult economic times”.
