Chesterfield to Welcome Olympic Torch

Olympic Torch

The Olympic Torch is coming to Chesterfield on Friday 29th June 2012

Lit by the sun’s rays at the site of the ancient Olympic Games in Greece, the Olympic Torch will arrive in Chesterfield on Friday 29th June at 12.45pm as a part of its 70-day UK tour.

20 local people, selected for their contributions to the community or to sport, will carry the flame on a 2.8 mile route through Chesterfield.

The relay arrives into Chesterfield from Hady Hill at approximately 12.45pm. It will travel up St Mary’s Gate, along Church Way and Knifesmithgate to Rose Hill before moving on to Clarence Road and West Bars. The flame continues along Chatsworth Road, then on to Walton Road before leaving the Borough via Matlock Road at 1.30pm.

The crowds will be entertained by music and dance performances, led by local school children, in both Rykneld Square and on the steps of the Town Hall beginning at 12.45pm. Local Morris Men will perform outside the Co-Op and the bells of the Crooked Spire will ring out as the Torch enters the Town Centre.

Celebrations will continue throughout the afternoon with an ‘Olympicnic’ in Queen’s Park, again with musical performances and dance displays.

Chesterfield MP, Toby Perkins, said: “The Olympic Torch, carried by local heroes, brings the excitement of the Games to every community of the UK.

“All eyes will be on Chesterfield and we have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show the rest of the Britain how great this part of the world really is.”

Mr Perkins added: “I’m looking forward to getting behind Team GB and celebrating the spirit of the Olympics, beginning on 29th June with the people of Chesterfield.”

Hello we are holding an event for a not for profit organisation and want to know if I can use the picture of the torch to promote our event where we will be having one of the torch bearers attend with the torch?

    Kind regards

I rise to support the motion, as my hon. Friend the Member for Llanelli (Nia Griffith) did. While this is a motion that many might have expected was limited in scope and was likely to be passed...
