Plans to build cutting-edge new accommodation for older people have been given the go-ahead by Chesterfield Borough Council and welcomed by the local MP.

Derelict Land at Foolow Court has been chosen to host the new complex, which will be built by Derby-based Chevin Homes in partnership with Derbyshire County Council.

The new development will follow the revolutionary Extra Care model, consisting of around 50 two-bedroom flats for the over-55s, in a ‘village’ setting.

Extra Care offers the freedom of independent living in your own spacious and comfortable flat, with on-site amenities including a cafe and plenty of provision for an active social life. Residents also have the additional peace of mind that a trained team is on-hand 24 hours-a-day should assistance be needed.

Councillor Dave Allen, Labour’s Shadow Member for Adult Care on Derbyshire County Council, said: “I have been pressing for this development for years as there is a real need for high quality accommodation for older people in the Chesterfield area.

“People who are more active in later life are also happier, healthier and able to stay independent for longer.”

Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins said: “I am delighted that the hard work of Labour Councillors like Dave Allen has finally borne fruit. This project could already have been underway if the previous Lib Dem administration at Chesterfield Borough Council had taken a more enlightened approach, but it is a real credit to Dave and the new Labour Council that he has delivered support for this project in the end.

Chesterfield Borough Council dragged its feet over building the facility, but since last May’s change of administration from Lib Dem to Labour it has been given much more proactive support.

Mr Perkins added: “Now we need to ensure any other obstacles are removed to drive this project forward as I know it will be highly valued by older people.”
