Toby Perkins MP meets with Chesterfield ex-service men

Armed Forces Day, Saturday 30th June, is to be marked with a series of memorable events in Chesterfield.

On Friday 29th June, the Armed Forces Week Organising Committee is arranging a display with stalls, refreshment and welfare advice in Eastwood Hall, beginning at 11am and lasting throughout the afternoon.

The pace is stepped up on Saturday, Armed Forces Day itself, when the Mayor of Chesterfield presents a scroll to the 575 Field Squadron (Air Support)(Volunteers) confirming their Freedom of the Borough in recognition of the Unit’s close relationship with the town. At 11am the Army volunteers will march from the Town Hall, where the Union Flag is flying all week, through the town before attending a presentation of medals by the Lord Lieutenant and a reception. Members of the public are invited to watch the parade.

A more informal event is scheduled to take place on the following weekend, Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th July. All are invited to the annual Staveley Armed Forces Day – a community celebration in Poolsbrook Country Park. Revellers are encouraged to don their 1940’s finery and enjoy the colourful range of music and dance displays, dine in the NAFFI-style field kitchen and peruse the large selection of stalls. Community organisations will be, as always, well represented. The highlight of the weekend will be a flypast by a Dakota aircraft which saw service in World War II.

Chesterfield MP, Toby Perkins, said: “Recognising the contribution of our service people past and present is vitally important.

“Those who have fought and continue to place themselves in the line of fire to preserve our way of life and the values we treasure deserve our respect, thanks and admiration.”

Mr Perkins added: “I am delighted that our Armed Forces are being celebrated so widely here in Chesterfield.”
