Reynolds’ Way, linking Newland Dale with Highfield Road, had fallen into a dilapidated state in recent years. Former Chesterfield Borough Labour councillor, Trevor Reynolds, had campaigned long and hard to secure investment to tidy up the trail. Unfortunately Trevor, who died in 2011, was unable to see the fruits of his labours but the local community backed a bid to rename the route, which was previously known unofficially as The Chicken Run, in his honour.

Derbyshire-based artist Sally Lemsford is now working with local neighbourhood groups, including the Friends of Abercrombie Park, to install some Chesterfield-inspired art to further enhance the short trail.

Toby Perkins, who opened the footpath with Trevor’s widow Angela, said: “This is a fitting tribute to a community activist who fought hard for the community he represented. Trevor was a humble man, so would have been very flattered that local people would have thought to honour him in this way.”

Mr Perkins added: “I hope many people enjoy using this newly revitalised footpath in the years to come.”
