WATCH: Small Business Saturday can help companies capitalise on potential

On 7 December the UK will hold its first Small Business Saturday, an idea which first began life in the US back in 2007 and will focus on the five million small firms in Britain. With these businesses providing 60 per cent of private sector jobs and 50 per cent of private sector turnover, the campaign will encourage consumers to shop at their local shops.

TP interview in his officeSmall businesses in the US made billions of dollars in sales during the day in 2012, following endorsement from president Barack Obama who shopped at a local book shop. Chuku Umunna, shadow secretary of state for business innovation and skills, says, ‘We must do more to celebrate the contribution local, small, independent businesses make to our economy and encourage people to buy from them. ‘Small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy, play a hugely important role in our communities and add to the unique character of each locality.’

Ahead of the campaign in December, the business news website visited Portculis House and the office of Chesterfield MP and shadow minister for small business, Toby Perkins to find out how the day could help smaller businesses one day become larger, more influential companies.
