Creative kids make MP’s Christmas

Budding young artists from a Chesterfield School have risen to a challenge set by their MP – to design his official Christmas card.

The Hady Primary pupils were asked by Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins to produce a festive design to adorn his seasonal greeting, sent to 3,000 people from businesses and constituents in Chesterfield to the Prime Minister and the Queen. The project was backed by sponsors Yeoman’s Outdoors and NAPIT meaning the venture used no public funds.

Mr Perkins visited the school to pick a winner from each year group before unveiling the overall winner at the Square Canvas Art Gallery in New Square in front of parents, teachers and guests on Friday. Judging criteria included inventive use of materials, originality of design and ability to reproduce the image in an electronic format for printing.

Mr Perkins announced that year one pupil Rehman Abdul had produced the winning design, commending his use of different textures and his ‘cheerful’ robins. All the other children’s designs have been included on the reverse of the card and each year group winner was presented with a certificate and gift by the MP.

Commenting on the competition, Mr Perkins said: “I was amazed by the quality of artwork and the originality of design the children presented me with. It was hard to pick a winner but I’m really looking forward to sending my card out.”

“I’d like to thank all the Hady pupils who took part, the teachers who facilitated the competition and our generous sponsors Yeoman’s Outdoors and NAPIT for their support.”
