Chesterfield MP, Toby Perkins, continued the town’s great legacy of goalkeeping this week, when he was presented with an award from the FA for the UK Parliament’s Football Club “Save of the Season”.

The 6’6” stopper was granted the prize for his save during UKPFC’s 7-5 win against Cystic Fibrosis Trust All Star XI back in May.  The game was played at QPR’s Loftus Road ground and involved the team of MPs and Lords taking on a group of celebrities including DJ Spoony and Omid Djalili to raise awareness about Cystic Fibrosis.  The charity match also raised £20,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

In his maiden speech to Parliament as a new MP back in 2010, Toby highlighted Chesterfield’s goalkeeping legacy.  He said:

“Football fans will know of the town as the home of goalkeepers, with legends such as Gordon Banks, the England World cup-winning goalkeeper, before him, Samuel Hardy, the England goalkeeper for 14 years at the end of the 19th century, and Bob Wilson, who served Arsenal, Scotland and sports broadcasting with tremendous distinction, all learning their trade in the town.”
