Post Office under fire from ‘dismayed’ MP over move decision

The decision to relocate Chesterfield’s Crown Post Office into WH Smith’s Pavements Centre premises has been met with ‘dismay’ by the local MP.

Post Office bosses made the announcement to staff this morning, after a ‘public consultation’, saying the current New Square branch would close at 1730 on 26th March with the new facility opening the next day. They claim the upheaval is necessary to ‘reduce operating costs’.

Toby pointingChesterfield’s MP Toby Perkins has blasted the consultation as a ‘sham’, which has ‘failed to take onboard public concerns’. He also questioned whether the new premises is fundamentally suitable to accommodate this vital service in a town of Chesterfield’s size, and expressed his ‘deep concern’ that the iconic current Post Office building in New Square is likely to sit empty following the move.

He said: “I’m far from convinced that this move is in the best interests of customers. The number of service points at the new outlet will be six, reduced from the offering of twelve in the current building,  with staff employed by WH Smith’s, rather than directly by the Post Office, on lesser terms and conditions.

“Nineteen staff, with decades of experience between them, work at the New Square facility; it’s my understanding that there has been little appetite amongst them to move to the Pavements Centre.

“It seems that the ‘public consultation’ has had little or no input in the Post Office’s current plans and was little more than a PR exercise”.

Mr Perkins added: “Once again, it seems that Chesterfield is losing out on a vital public service. I will be monitoring the new premises closely as it opens and will be taking up any concerns or detectable falls in service with Post Office management.”
