Toby Perkins MP today visited the site of the former St Helena’s Girls’ Grammar School to hear about The University of Derby’s plans to sympathetically re-develop the site and bring the old school back to active life.  The University will run engineering and nursing courses at the campus, building on the town’s industrial heritage and Derby’s existing strong links with training at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

Toby Perkins said “This is an exciting development for the Town and I am delighted that The University of Derby has decide to expand its campus into our town.  Whilst I am delighted nursing and engineering will be part of the offer, as Shadow Minister for Small Business, I am particularly interested in the inclusion of business incubator units, and look forward to the development of some exciting new business ventures in Chesterfield.

“One of the problems small towns like ours have, is the considerable drain that happens when our young people go away to universities.  If you study away you often stay away and Chesterfield is the poorer for not getting our young people back.  Having a University campus in town will encourage people to study at University level in Chesterfield, and to remain here after they graduate.

“St Helena’s site is perfect for redevelopment, well situated within the town, close to the center, Chesterfield college and transport links.  But more than this it is a beautiful historic building which enriches the architectural heritage of our town, and I can’t think of a better use for it than once again to be a place of learning.  I am delighted Derby University is taking such a sympathetic approach to its redevelopment and look forward to watching progress over the next few months.

“Our young people deserve access to the best, and these opportunities will expand horizons and widen choice”.
