Chesterfield MP joins calls to make every child a lifesaver

Toby Perkins, MP for Chesterfield, is calling on all schools to teach first aid and life-saving skills to their students.

Toby joined representatives from the British Heart Foundation at an event in Parliament to discuss the number of lives that could be saved by teaching school children how to do CPR and provide emergency first aid.

Toby said, “Recent research that shows that only seven per cent of the UK population is both confident and

skilled to help in a medical emergency. Having attended a brief parliamentary training session, I am now able to perform CPR. I’d love all Chesterfield schoolchildren to have the same skills.”

Toby attended the event, which was called to support the Compulsory Emergency First Aid Education Bill.

Toby said, “I am now writing to all schools about the scheme, which will provide a free kit to allow all schools to take part. I hope that as many as possible join in”.

ACS Heart of the Community is an annual event which brings together retailers from across the country with MPs to voice their concerns about the future of the sector.

Toby Perkins said: “There are 110 convenience stores in the Chesterfield constituency providing almost 900 jobs for local people. These shops provide essential goods and services in our community and are vital to the economy.”

The ACS Local Shop Report 2015 revealed that there are 51,524 convenience stores in the UK with the sector now worth £37.7billion and providing jobs for over 407,000 people. Local shop owners work extremely long hours with 25% of shop owners working more than 70 hours per week on average, and 20% taking o holiday at all throughout the year.

Toby added, “During these tough economic times it is more important than ever that MPs engage with local retailers, and work hard to ensure new regulations and Government cuts do not undermine consumer confidence and impact on small business.”

Big Energy Saving Week

Toby Perkins MP urges people in Chesterfield to help elderly friends and relatives save money on their energy bills this winter

Toby Perkins is backing a campaign calling for people to help their elderly friends and relatives save money on their energy bills.

The Big Energy Saving Week – a joint campaign with Energy Saving Trust, Department of Energy and Climate Change and Citizens Advice – is urging people to learn what savings they can make by switching energy supplier and, where possible, help an older relative or neighbour to find a better deal.

Toby, who attended the campaign’s launch event in Westminster, said

“With household budgets still under so much pressure, customers need to ensure they are getting the best deal. It is much easier to switch energy supplier than people realise and can save hundreds of pounds”

As people prepare for winter one of the things many can do is switch to a better gas and electricity deal. The findings from an Ipsos MORI survey of 2,710 UK participants shows millions of householders across the UK don’t realise how much they could save from switching energy supplier or tariff.

Almost half (45 per cent) of people don’t think they could save anything by switching and of the other half, the vast majority (75 per cent) believe it could only save £100 or less.  The survey also showed that a fifth of the people spoken to to said they were aware of an elderly person they look after has fallen behind or been unable to pay their energy bills.Big Energy Saving Week

Toby added, “Many elderly people don’t have access to the internet or don’t have the confidence to get on the phone and switch to a different energy provider. I’m urging people to support this campaign and help their parents, grandparents, friends and neighbours to secure the best deal possible this winter.”

Chesterfield MP, Toby Perkins, met with Breast Cancer Care in Parliament last week to pledge support for

people living with incurable secondary breast cancer by calling for improved data collection to support organisers providing care.

Currently data for primary breast cancer is recorded, yet no accurate figures exist around the number of people diagnosed or living with incurable secondary breast cancer. Breast Cancer Care believes that better quality data will help plan the vital services needed for patients.

On Secondary Breast Cancer Awareness Day, Toby attended the parliamentary event to meet women who are living with the disease, and to show their support for the charity’s campaign.

Toby said:

“Every year around 11,700 patients die from Secondary Breast Cancer, the equivalent of 32 women every single day.

“It is shocking we still don’t have accurate data on those living with this incurable disease and I am calling on the Government to make this a priority and to do more to support people affected by Secondary Breast Cancer.”

Toby is supporting Breast Cancer Care’s request that the Government implement a ‘bucket list’, to improve the care and support that people living with secondary breast cancer currently receive:

  1. No one living in unnecessary pain
  2. Everyone has access to the treatments they need
  3. All patients have a clinical nurse specialist as part of their care
  4. Hospitals are able to plan services to meet patients’ needs
  5. Everyone’s care is co-ordinated and joined up.

Danni Manzi, Head of Policy & Campaigns at Breast Cancer Care, said:

“We are extremely grateful to Toby Perkins for coming along to our event and showing his support. Data collection is crucial to improving the care and support available for the women and men living with secondary breast cancer.”

Toby Perkins with a personal message for the #BleedForEngland campaign

Toby Perkins has called on people in Chesterfield to show their support by registering themselves as blood donors and join the NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) #BleedForEngland campaign.

Toby said, “Over the last few weeks we have seen amazing support for the England rugby team and the NHSBT’s #BleedForEngland campaign. We may not have been successful in the World Cup, but I am calling on people in Chesterfield to help make this campaign a success.”

The NHSBT wants people to go on to support in a different way – by registering to #BleedForEngland and help patients in hospitals across the country. They hope to register over 100,000 new donors before the end of the World Cup.

Nationally, less than 3% of people living in England aged 17 – 70 have donated blood in the last 12 months, and in Chesterfield only 1.9% of people are active blood donors. Since the launch of the #BleedForEngland campaign on 15 August, NHSBT has had an amazing response to the rallying cry to sign up new blood donors by the end of October.

Toby stated: “I believe that together, people in Chesterfield can help this campaign reach its goal. Donating blood is vital to the NHS – by donating you are literally saving and improving lives!”

If you are 17 or over and interested in donating, please visit www.blood.co.uk or call 0300 123 23 23 today to find out if you are eligible to donate, register as a blood donor and to book your appointment

Chesterfield is home to 34 of the UK’s fastest growing smaller companies” says Toby Perkins MP

Toby Perkins, MP for Chesterfield, revealed that a new report produced by the Centre for Economics and Business Research, shows that Chesterfield is home to 34 high growth small businesses (HGSBs).

Representing less than 1% of UK businesses, this tiny group of companies are punching well above their weight by making a significant contribution to UK economic growth and proving they can be a force for a regional revival.

One in every three new jobs in the UK and almost 20% of economic growth was created by HGSBs last year. On average, these 22,470 companies created on average 4,500 news jobs each week in 2014 – three times more than the entire FTSE 100. In the East Midlands these businesses employed 40,000 people and contributed £5.1 billion of turnover to the UK economy last year.

The Octopus High Growth Small Business Report 2015, commissioned by Octopus Investments (Octopus), highlights the value of HGSBs to the UK economy and the role these companies could play in driving regional growth, addressing the North-South divide and rebalancing the economy. The report, which makes the case for increasing the number of HGSBs by 25% in every region in the next five years, reveals that the East Midlands has 1,300 HGSBs.

Toby said: “It is fantastic to see that Chesterfield is home to so many high growth small businesses. These businesses are creating hundreds of jobs and are a vital driving force behind prosperity in our community. We need to support these companies to help them realise their full potential as a force for local growth, and celebrate their role in the prosperity of our town.”

Toby met with Iain Wright MP, Chairman of the Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee, representatives from Octopus Investments and MPs from across the UK, to discuss the new report and the importance of HGSBs in driving forward growth.

Toby Perkins MP calls on the Government to Protect Funding for Medical Research

Campaigners for better outcomes for heart-related patients received a boost when Chesterfield MP, Toby Perkins, joined their campaign recently.

Toby showed his support for UK medical research by joining British Heart Foundation (BHF) scientists to hear how research is helping to save and improve the lives of the millions of people affected by heart and circulatory disease in the UK.

At the Labour Party Conference in Brighton, Toby Perkins spoke to BHF-funded researchers and raced around the special BHF track to learn more about the latest research projects and find out why it’s important the Government continues to invest in science in the forthcoming Spending Review and keeps UK research in poll position.

Toby meeting British Heart Foundation staff at Labour Party Conference

Toby Perkins said: “There are an estimated 14,540 people in Chesterfield living with heart and circulatory disease, and seven million people across the UK. It causes a quarter of all deaths in the UK. But with the public’s support, charities like the BHF are able to fund some of the world’s leading researchers, who work tirelessly to find the next major breakthrough that could help save more lives. That is why I support continued investment in the Spending Review for the health of the UK and its economy.”

The BHF is the largest independent funder of cardiovascular research and aims to spend around £100 million every year on world class research to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Scientific research has driven huge improvements in the way that we live and work as individuals, and to the UK economy as a whole.

Toby Perkins is calling on the Government to maintain the science budget in real terms. He said, “the UK government invests £198 million a year in the indirect costs of charity funded research, a relatively modest amount when you consider the BHF alone is spending over £100m. We must continue to invest in research to help reduce costs to the NHS money and save lives.”
