Government plans put vulnerable people in Derbyshire at risk, warns Chesterfield MP

Toby Perkins, MP for Chesterfield, has raised concerns about government plans to cut housing benefit support for thousands of elderly and vulnerable people across Derbyshire, which could put 687 homes in Chesterfield at risk.

Mr Perkins said, “Once again this Government are proposing cuts to those who can least afford it. The cuts that have already been made to Council budgets over the last five years has already had a huge impact on the provision of supported housing, and these proposals could effectively destroy what support is left in Derbyshire.”

Supported housing provides specialist care for groups including the elderly, the homeless, disabled people, veterans, people with mental health problems, young people leaving care and women fleeing domestic violence. Housing experts say that across the country 156,000 supported homes are at risk of closure due to the Chancellor’s cuts.

Labour called a vote this week to ask that the Government exempt supported housing from the housing benefit cuts and to consult with charities, councils and housing associations to safeguard this Apprentice Video Screen Shotvital accommodation. The Government defeated the motion.

Toby said, “I’m very disappointed that the Government rejected our motion and have put vulnerably-housed people at further risk. These proposals could force the closure of thousands of specialist homes and I urge the Government to reconsider before it’s too late”.

Photocall for parliamentary launch of English National Anthem petition

Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins has encouraged Chesterfield’s England supporting fans to add their name to a new petition calling for a National anthem for England at the petition’s parliamentary launch this week.

The proposal for a new National anthem to be played when England and not Britain are being represented on the sporting field has passed its first stage in parliament, and following widespread polling support for the idea a new petition has been created to give people across the country the chance to show their support for the idea.

Opinion polls suggest the plan is a popular one with Sky Sports and Daily Mirror polls showing 62% and 71% respectively backing the plan. A further YouGov poll showed just 57% in favour and just 21% against in a poll which had Land of Hope and Glory coming out on top.

Other choices like Jerusalem, I vow to thee, my country and Swing low sweet chariot have also been mooted.

Toby said: I would encourage people across Chesterfield who back the idea of a National anthem to be used by England to add their name to the petition. God Save the Queen is Britain’s anthem and should be kept for Britain, and just as England fans have the flag of St George so they should have a specifically English anthem.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Toby Perkins MP who is proposing the bill said: “The level of interest and support for this has been overwhelming, and I am delighted that there is now a chance for people to show their backing for the bill by signing the e-petition. We will be aiming to show the level of support that there is across the country for this, so that the government embark upon a proper consultation to select an English national anthem for use in sporting events when England are represented.

The petition is available to sign at: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/119904.

New E petition to support English National Anthem launched

ENAEngland Football and Rugby fans who support a new sporting National anthem for England are being encouraged to sign up to a new e-petition which was launched in parliament today.

This follows huge public support for the idea of a new National anthem for use in sporting contests that followed a 10 minute rule bill brought forward by Toby Perkins on 14th January. Opinion polls showed widespread support for the idea in polls on Sky Sports (62%) and the Daily Mirror (71%) backing the plan. A further YouGov poll showed just 27% choosing to retain God Save the Queen in a poll which had Land of Hope and Glory coming out on top.

Other choices like Jerusalem, I vow to thee, my country and Swing low sweet chariot have also been mooted.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Toby Perkins MP who is proposing the bill said: “The level of interest and support for this has been overwhelming, and I am delighted that there is now a chance for people to show their backing for the bill by signing our e-petition. We will be aiming to show the level of support that there is across the country for this, so that the government embark upon a proper consultation to select an English national anthem for use in sporting events when England are represented.

The new National anthem would be used when England were being represented on the sporting field rather than Britain. God Save the Queen would remain the national anthem of United Kingdom and would be used on civic occasions and when Great Britain was being represented such as the Olympics or the Davis Cup.

The petition is available to sign at: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/119904.
