Chesterfield MP calls on supermarkets to install defibrillators in stores

Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins has called on major supermarket chains to install defibrillators at their stores to help increase the survival chances of those who suffer Sudden Cardiac Arrest, one of the UK’s biggest killers, and has urged Chesterfield stores to pledge to install them as soon as possible.
Toby said “I’ve recently had this campaign raised with me by my constituents and I think it has immense value. CPR is an invaluable skill and can save lives, but a defibrillator on-hand massively increases the chances of survival for someone who has had a cardiac arrest – I think all supermarket stores, large and small, should have one on site in case someone suffers from cardiac arrest either in store or nearby.”
Sudden Cardiac Arrest is one of the biggest killers in the UK and claims the lives of 100,000 people each year. Around 30,000 people will experience a cardiac arrest outside of hospital every year, in a public place or community setting, and there has been a growing campaign to get more defibrillators into the community to help increase survival rates. Defibrillators (‘AEDs’) don’t deliver a shock unless one is needed, and many don’t require special training to use, so campaigners view defibrillators which are publicly accessible as a viable way to try to increase survival rates.

The supermarket chain Asda pledged to install defibrillators in 600 of its stores nationwide in 2014 in recognition of their importance to the fight against Sudden Cardiac Arrest, and the campaign has been boosted locally by the East Midlands Ambulance Service’s commitment to install defibrillators in public spaces and the work of the Community First Responders – who aim to get to incidents local to them before ambulances in order to administer first aid and emergency medical support such as defibrillation.
Toby said “Every 1 minute without defibrillation reduces someone’s chance of survival by 10% according to the British Heart Foundation (BHF). I’m committed to supporting education for children and adults about emergency first aid and ensuring we are more aware of how to save lives as a nation, and I think increasing the availability and accessibility of defibrillators is an important element in that campaign.”

Toby discussing the importance of learning life-saving skills

Toby was joined at the launch by fellow Labour MPs, Natascha Engel and Dennis Skinner, together with representatives from Chesterfield FC and the Chesterfield Mayor & Mayoress.

The world record attempt is being organised by the Community Save a Life Scheme, in partnership with Bolster District Council. Chesterfield FC, the British Heart Foundation, Rotary International and Inner Wheel are also offering their support. The current record for the number of people attending a first aid lesson stands at 1,700 and organisers are hoping the new attempt will almost double that record and have 3,000 people in attendance on

Toby Perkins said, “It’s crucial – it will be real asset to the community if we have 3,000 more lifesavers. Someone nearly died here at the football ground recently and he survived because there was a lifesaver here at the ground. You never know the circumstances where it may be needed, and to know that you have the skills and you can save a life is important.

“We have a Bill going through Parliament to try and have life-saving skills brought onto the school curriculum.”

Anyone interested in attending the event on May 20th – or if you have life-saving skills and can teach others – can contact organisers on csals@btinternet.com or call 07876 756 356.

Tories hand millions to wealthiest councils – but there’s only cuts for Chesterfield

Apprentice Video Screen Shot

Labour MP Toby Perkins has accused the Government of a stitch-up after the Chancellor today handed hundreds of millions of pounds to the wealthiest Tory councils whilst offering nothing to Chesterfield.

Chesterfield Council has suffered some of the highest spending cuts since 2010, but has received nothing at all in today’s announcement. Meanwhile, leafy Surrey – one of England’s wealthiest shires – today gets a hand-out of £24m despite suffering far fewer cuts in recent years and suffering less of a squeeze on public services than Chesterfield. Indeed the top 27 recipients of today’s grants are all Conservative controlled councils.

Tory MPs became alarmed when they realised their constituencies might soon see cuts similar to those imposed on the rest of the country, and threatened to vote down the Government’s planned cuts until Communities Secretary Greg Clark announced a £300 million ‘transitional grant’. The Government have refused to say where the extra money comes from.

Labour analysis shows that £255 million of the grant – 85% – goes to Tory councils. Areas where Labour runs the council receive just £17 million, despite suffering the harshest cuts since 2010 and having higher levels of deprivation.

Toby Perkins MP said:
“Chesterfield has seen some of the harshest cuts over recent years with local services severely impacted. It is therefore shocking and scandalous that today we have seen the Conservative Government hand out millions to rural Conservative councils whilst leaving Labour councils like Chesterfield without any additional funding at all.

“Unbelievably the top 27 Conservative councils receive £202 million whilst 175 councils receive nothing at all from the Government. Chesterfield has been unfairly neglected by the Tory Government, and I will be writing to the Communities Secretary to seek an urgent explanation from him.”

Steve Reed MP, Shadow Minister for Local Government, said:
“The Government is covering up where this money has come from and won’t explain why almost all of it is being handed to Tory councils just weeks before council elections across the country.

“Councils that have already been cut to the bone since 2010 are getting nothing but more cuts. The Tories have picked millions of pounds from taxpayer’s pockets to buy off their own MPs when faced with a rebellion in the House of Commons.

“This is a blatant misuse of public money in a shameless attempt to buy votes and buy off Tory MPs.”
