MP backs ‘arts for all’ project

Toby Perkins MP used a recent visit to the Donut Creative Arts Studios (DCAS) in his constituency of Chesterfield to urge Derbyshire residents to make the most of local facilities.

Toby said, “In these times of increased pressure on local authority budgets due to cuts by central government, every service needs to be used to its maximum potential. The Donut Creative Studios are providing some excellent group sessions and activities, and I would urge residents from across Derbyshire to get more involved with what they have to offer.”

DCAS deliver daily open access workshops in music, dance, drama, media and art, for all 11-19 year olds (or up to 25 if disabled or have a learning disability). They also manage live events, arts

projects and offer venue hire for performances, training, conferences and workshops. DCAS staff are qualified youth arts practitioners with years of professional experience and a passion for the arts.

Toby said, “It was fantastic to visit the studios again and see the range of activities on offer. I urge parents, schools, youth groups and young people to contact DCAS and speak to them about what they can do at the service.”

Toby has challenged members of DCAS arts group to design his Christmas card this year and will be picking a winner at the end of this month.

Q&A at Parkside Community School

Parliament Week is a programme of events and activities run every November that connects people with the UK Parliament and increases awareness of how our democracy works. Toby Perkins visited Parkside Community School, St Mary’s Catholic High School and Hady Primary School for Q&A sessions with students.

Toby said, “Parliament Week is all about connecting the public with Parliament and MPs going into schools helps engage people with politics from an early age. The variety of questions I took shows that the children and young people in Chesterfield are from apathetic and are keen to learn about how politics and politicians shape our society and affect all our lives”.

MP sees ‘woof’ draft of plans for new RSPCA animal centre in Chesterfield

The Chesterfield RSPCA have developed exciting proposals to redevelop their animal centre on Spital Lane in Hady and invited Toby Perkins MP along to see their plans.

The current animal centre was built in the 1960s and is in desperate need of refurbishment. The centre takes in hundreds of cats, dogs, rabbits and other small pets every year, rehoming 785 animals last year, making it one of the busiest animal centres in the UK.

Toby said, “The dedication and hard work by the staff and volunteers at the centre was wonderful to see. The new plans will create a modern centre that has better conditions for the animals and

complies with today’s standards, which have significantly moved on since the centre first opened.”

The Chesterfield RSPCA launched a public appeal in 2014 to raise funds to pay for the redevelopment and have already raised £1.2m of the £2m projected costs.

Toby said, “What many people do not realise is that every local RSPCA branch is independent and receives no central funding. All the work done in Chesterfield relies on local fundraising, adoption fees and dedicated volunteers. The fundraising efforts by Rachel, Peter and the whole team is extraordinary and I would urge people to donate what they can to help the branch reach their £2m target”.

MP backs campaign to protect shopworkers from abuse

Toby Perkins, MP for Chesterfield, backed the ‘Freedom from Fear’ campaign, led by shopworkers’ union USDAW, calling for an end to abuse in the workplace.

Toby joined staff, shop stewards and Usdaw organisers at the Tesco superstore on Lockoford Lane in Chesterfield to raise awareness about the unacceptable abuse and violence that is often directed at shopworkers.

Toby said, “I am proud to support Usdaw’s ‘Freedom from Fear’ campaign and will do all I can to help protect our retail workers from threats, violence and abuse in the workplace. Retail staff are an

important part of our communities and our economy, they should be valued and respected.”

A recent survey of retail staff by Usdaw showed that in the last year alone one in ten shopworkers have been physically assaulted, a quarter have been threatened and 44% verbally abused.

Toby added, “Coming up to the Christmas period, shopworkers will be doing longer hours in hectic environments and probably missing a lot of time with their families. I would urge shoppers to keep cool heads, treat all staff with respect and remember that they are simply there to do their jobs”.

Toby Perkins MP said:

“I want to see that 84% of households in Chesterfield save hundreds of pounds by switching their gas and electricity supplier this winter.

People tell me that if you’ve been with the same supplier for years switching can seem like a daunting task that is why I support the Energy Switch Guarantee which promises to make switching simple and smooth for everyone.”

Tina Tietjen, independent chair of the Energy Switch Guarantee said:

“I encourage people to shop around this winter for the best deal for them. Customers can save hundreds of pounds and with the Energy Switch Guarantee they are assured a simple, speedy and safe switch.

Toby Perkins MP calls for an urgent investigation into Tax Credits chaos

Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins has demanded a government investigation after hundreds of families in Derbyshire had their Tax Credits payments wrongly suspended.

Concentrix, the company contracted by the Government to investigate fraud and error in the Tax Credit system, had their contract withdrawn after wrongly withdrawing hundreds of claims.

This week Toby Perkins has demanded straight answers for the people of Chesterfield:

“Whilst I welcome that HMRC has finally taken action in announcing that the Concentrix contract will not be renewed, that doesn’t help the families who have been pushed over the breadline and

made to feel like they are benefit cheats. The Government must investigate the conduct of Concentrix, reinstate all claims immediately and apologise to my constituents who have been so poorly treated.”

Lauren Clarke from Chesterfield (pictured) was one of the constituents who contacted Toby for help when her Tax Credits were stopped after Concentrix had wrongly accused her of living with the

previous tenant. Pressure from Toby has resulted in her Tax Credits being reinstated and backdated.

Toby, “Lauren was understandably very angry when she came to me. Not only had her money been stopped, but HMRC were demanding back hundreds of pounds. Thankfully, we were able to rectify the mistakes quickly, but she should never have been placed in this situation and the Government must investigate. I would also urge any of my constituents who have had their claim suspended to contact my office.”
