A two-year campaign to have the speed limit dropped from 40mph to 30mph along a dangerous stretch of Matlock Road looks to have been successful as Derbyshire County Council have announced a Speed Limit Order that will see a 30mph limit introduced.

The campaign has been supported by local MP, Toby Perkins, who has been pressing the County Council on this after meeting concerned residents in 2019.

Toby said, “This is great news and a real relief to the residents along Matlock Road, who have for years being feeling like they are putting their lives at risk whenever they leave their driveways. This will also improve the safety for all road users and pedestrians.”

Residents have welcomed the news, though there are still some concerns over where the new 30mph limit should start and end.

Toby added, “It has often felt over the last few years that the County Council’s approach to road safety has often been reactive rather than proactive. It is always better to look at ways to prevent accidents before they occur, and I hope that this is the start of a different approach by the authority.”
