MP for Chesterfield, Toby Perkins, has today become a hedgerow hero.

The scheme is part of the CPRE push to value our hedgerows in a way that benefits the climate.

Hedgerows – one of the UK’s most accessible wildlife habitats, can be found on roads, footpaths, and gardens. They have a range of ecological benefits and can help absorb carbon, protect against flooding and improve soil fertility.

A recent CPRE report found that for every £1 invested in hedgerows, £3.92 could be returned to the economy.

It comes as Labour commits to reducing our carbon footprint and creating a recovery that will improve our climate and create further jobs as set out in the Green Recover Plan.

Toby said “I am proud to become a Hedgerow Hero. Preserving our hedgerows and natural environment are of crucial importance. With COP26 coming up, it’s important that policymakers are considering ways to improve our environment and reach net zero.  It is great to see that CPRE are working to reverse the 50% decline that has been seen and I am pleased to give my support to their work”.

Toby added: “Hedgerow protection is a small way to have a big impact. It will form a key aspect of Labour’s plan to deliver a sustainable future both here in Chesterfield and across the country.”
