Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins has today backed a bill that would recognise animals as sentient beings.

The Bill, titled the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill, would recommit to legislation that was lost once the United Kingdom left the European Union.

The proposed legislation has wide cross-party support and endorsed by a wide mix of environmental and animal organisations including British Veterinary Association and Crustacean Compassion.

Within the bill provision includes the creation of an Animal Sentience Committee and also creates relevant powers for reports by the committee to produced and be laid before parliament.

Toby said: “I welcome any legislation that supports animal welfare. I have been a long-standing advocate for animal rights within Chesterfield and Derbyshire. I have received a number of letters and emails from local residents on this issue and happy to pledge my personal support, joining Labour colleagues, to back this issue.”

Toby recently visited Derbyshire Wildlife Trust to see the work they are undertaking to vaccinate badgers against Bovine TB. He also recently became a Hedgerow Hero to support the work of rewilding and support species like hedgehogs to thrive.

Toby added: “I hope this legislation will provide an appropriate and much needed mechanism to protect animals and help towards a greener future.”
