Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins gives his backing to Labour’s plan to deal Coronavirus and future variants, which comes as the pandemic approaches its second anniversary.

Last weekend, Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, announced Labour’s plan to protect our lives, livelihoods, and liberties. These included:

  • Retain a Jabs Army of volunteers who could rapidly rollout a vaccine, easing the pressure on the NHS
  • Draw up a roadmap for decision-making, to give certainty on what action should be considered when
  • Work with British manufacturers to make sure we always have a supply of tests when we need them
  • Stop the Conservatives’ sell-off of the UK’s Vaccine Manufacturing Centre

This would mean that under Labour’s proposal the government would strike the balance between protecting lives and also making sure that our society can continue to operate with as limited restrictions as possible.

Former Chair of the APPG for Pubs and current member of the APPG for Beer, Toby Perkins has said: “It is important that we control this virus and ultimately learn to live with it. It is not going away anytime soon, and we need a practical approach from government so to allow for people to not be constantly disrupted by restrictions.”

He continued: “I have always said that it’s important that a balance is struck between protecting public health and civil liberties. Labour’s plan would do that and support areas like tourism and hospitality to continue to operate and be the pillars of our community.”
