Toby Perkins MP Standing up for Chesterfield and Staveley
Many thanks to all the people who have already contacted Toby’s office with offers to house a Ukrainian refugee.
The Government has now announced the ‘Homes for Ukraine Scheme’ asking people to sponsor a refugee to come to the UK and stay in their property.
Homes for Ukraine Scheme
What is needed:
- Sponsors should provide accommodation for as long as they are able, but we have a minimum expectation of 6 months.
- The Home Office will also check that the people offering up their homes are in a position to provide that support.
Eligibility:
- Someone is eligible for the scheme if they are a Ukrainian national or the immediate family member of a Ukrainian national, and were resident in Ukraine prior to 1 January 2022.
- People arriving under this scheme will be able to:
- Live and work in the UK for up to three years
- Access healthcare, benefits, employment support, education, and English language tuition
How to go about scheme:
- If you know a person, you should get in contact directly and prepare a visa application for them. Applications will go live on Friday 18th March
- If NOT known you should contact charities, faith groups and community organisations to get contacts so to fill out the form.
Support Available:
- Personally: £350 a month for taking a refugee (however this doesn’t increase if you take in more than one)
- Local Authorities: Each LA will receive more than £10,000 per Ukrainian refugee using this route to the UK
- Additional payments will be available to support school-age children who need to be accommodated within the education system.
