Toby Perkins MP has today welcomed the release of Nazanin Zaghari Radcliffe from detention in Iran.

Since 2016, Nazanin has been detained in Iran on baseless charges after she visited family in the country.

It comes after the tireless work of Tulip Siddiq MP, Richard Radcliffe and many others who have worked tirelessly to put pressure on the Foreign Office to secure the release of Nazanin and others who are detained in Iran, along with other British Nationals who are detained throughout the world.

Toby recently spoke in a Westminster Hall debate where he highlighted the role of the barbaric Iranian regime and the extent to which they were culpable for Nazanin’s unjust incarceration.

Toby said “I am so glad to see that Nazanin is on her way home after a hellish 6 years. I know how difficult it has been for her family and friends. The hard work of her MP and my former shadow minister colleague, Tulip Siddiq has been phenomenal and has led the way with Richard to raise this issue in Parliament and with the government. I’m also sure that many in Chesterfield will be happy to hear this news following the number of letters and emails I have received on this case.”

He added: “Whilst this is positive news it is important to also that the Iranian regime continues to arbitrarily detain British citizen and there has been a succession of failures of public policy in that have seen Nazanin and others go through hell through no fault of their own.

Culpability for this injustice lies with the Iranian government alone, but certain previous Foreign Secretary’s have made this situation worse when they should have been making it better.”
