Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins has sponsored an event to promote the LTA and their plan to improve access to tennis through investment and maintenance of public park tennis courts.

The LTA and UK Government are jointly investing over £30million to refurbish public tennis courts across Britain and support a new generation of players to get into the sport. This will see public park tennis courts in poor or unplayable condition brought back to life for the benefit of local communities.

The Parks Tennis Project investment is designed to open up tennis to people of all backgrounds, to level up sports provision across the nation, and provide greater opportunities for children and adults to be active. Park tennis courts are particularly important in providing affordable, engaging and accessible opportunities for more female players and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as being the most popular venue for women to play after they have left education.

The LTA have announced that King George V Park and Tapton Park tennis courts have been earmarked for potential investment.

Toby stated that “This is an incredible opportunity for investment in our sports facilities in Chesterfield and Staveley and to get more of our local community playing tennis”. He added “the huge health benefits and during the pandemic it became apparent how important open spaces are for socialising, our mental health and keeping fit”.
