Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins welcomed the news that, following pressure from campaigners and MPs, DEFRA has finally announced an Environmental Improvement Plan 2023 which includes an ambitious hedgerow target.

More than 49,500 people signed the Countryside Charity (CPRE) petition which called on the government to commit to significant hedgerow planting and restoration to increase the extent of UK’s hedgerows by 40% by 2050

Toby was inspired to sign up to become a Hedgerow Hero, advocating for hedgerows in Parliament, and backing the CPRE campaign.

Hedgerows – one of the UK’s most accessible wildlife habitats, can be found on roads, footpaths, and gardens. They have a range of ecological benefits and can help absorb carbon, protect against flooding and improve soil fertility.

A recent CPRE report found that for every £1 invested in hedgerows, £3.92 could be returned to the economy.

Toby stated “Dozens of local residents have previously contacted me to voice their concerns about the need to preserve our hedgerows and natural environment. I have been proud to represent their views, signing up to become a Hedgerow Hero and giving my support to the CPRE campaign”.

He added “It is great news that our campaigning has led to Ministers announcing ambitious targets to restore wildlife habitats. However, as Ministers come and go with rapid frequency of late, I will be keeping pressure on the government to hold them to account”.
