Toby Perkins MP Standing up for Chesterfield and Staveley
On the day that Ministers finally accepted that people in areas like Chesterfield are being ripped off by fuel companies, does this answer reassure you that they are on your side?
Toby Perkins: Thank you. I think the Hon. Gentleman from Bedfordshire just asked a very good question. In February I wrote to all of the major supermarkets that have outlets in Chesterfield asking them why they were retailing petrol 10p more in Chesterfield than they were just 10 miles up the road in Sheffield? They were very transparent and honest about it. They said ‘it’s a market, we think we can make more money out of Chesterfield residents than we do out of Sheffield residents. That’s why we charge you more.’ Despite the fact there was no additional costs to getting it there and whilst I welcome the greater transparency, making it easier for consumers, what they will see in Chesterfield is they are paying more than they were up the road in Sheffield and I think the Hon. Gentleman from Bedfordshire’s question is very apposite. Is there anything in what the Minister is announcing today that will actually empower people in Chesterfield to bring their prices down?
Minister: Transparency.
