Toby Perkins MP Standing up for Chesterfield and Staveley
Ashgate Hospice stand to be the Chesterfield beneficiaries of this year’s annual charity bet in connection to the world’s most famous horse race.
MPs have once again taken part in a Grand National charity bet initiative, looking to raise thousands of pounds for local charities. Over 50 MPs and peers have been invited by the Betting & Gaming Council to wager £50 on their picks for the big race, with all winnings set to go to charity.
Chesterfield MP, Toby Perkins, placed his charity bet at the Ladbrokes shop on Chatsworth Road, with all the winnings going to support the brilliant work of Ashgate Hospice.
Toby was invited by the Betting & Gaming Council to visit the Ladbrokes shop on Chatsworth Road to place his charity bet – with Toby taking a punt on Minella Cocooner at 25/1 – but even if Toby’s horse doesn’t come in, Ladbrokes will be making a donation to Ashgate Hospice to ensure the charity does not miss out.
Toby Perkins MP said: “The Grand National is an icon of the British sporting calendar that creates a real buzz, even for people who don’t usually follow racing. For thousands of customers dropping in to their local bookies this week, this might be the only event they place a bet on this year.
I was delighted to meet staff and customers’ at the Ladbrokes store on Chatsworth Road and accept their offer of a charity bet whilst also discussing the important work they have been doing on safer gambling and the positive impact they have seen since the government cut Fixed Odds Betting Terminals maximum stake from £100 to £2.”
Toby added, “I will once again be selecting the brilliant Ashgate Hospice to be the beneficiary should my horse win. Ashgate Hospice holds a special place in the heart of Chesterfield and most of us who live here have had cause to be thankful to the Hospice for their care of a loved one.
In previous years, I have placed my bet on a horse with a name that has some significance to me, but I have never won. So this year I’ve had a look at the form, the rider and the trainer and tried to take a more informed decision. The trainer of Minella Cocooner also trained last year’s winner and there are a few racing pundits tipping her for the win, so you never know.”
