Nearly one million people in the UK are living with dementia – a number that will continue to grow over the course of this Parliament. But too many are still missing out on the specialist care they need, Toby Perkins, MP for Chesterfield, heard from Dementia UK at Labour Party Conference last week, following from representations from constituents.

Dementia is an issue that could impact us all – one in two people will be affected by dementia in their lifetime; either by receiving a diagnosis, caring for someone, or both. Everyone should have access to specialist support, whenever they need it.

Specialist dementia Admiral Nurses provide the gold standard of dementia care and support. They can act as a single point of clinical contact, offering advice and support with any aspect of dementia.

In Chesterfield, specialist support from Admiral Nurses can be accessed at a number of GP practices, including The Brimington Surgery, Calow and Brimington Practice, Dronfield Medical Practice, Stubley Medical Centre, Oakhill Medical Practice, Inspire Health, The Surgery at Wheatbridge, Whittington Moor Surgery, Chatsworth Road Medical Centre, Chesterfield Medical Partnership, Newbold Surgery, and Royal Primary Care.

If you are not registered with one of the GP practices above, or if you need to speak to a nurse urgently or in the evening or at the weekend, you can speak with one of Dementia UK’s nurses on the free and confidential Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline. Call 0800 888 6678 or email helpline@dementiauk.org during the week up until 9pm and at the weekend between 9am to 5pm.

Toby Perkins MP for Chesterfield said: “Dementia will impact one in two of us. Indeed, its impacts have been felt in my family. No one should have to face this condition alone.

I was delighted to speak with Dementia UK at Labour Party Conference and hear about the free and confidential specialist helpline that they host, which provides advice and support with any aspect of dementia. To any of my constituents that are affected by dementia, please do not be afraid to seek the support, call the helpline at 0800 888 6678.”
